Every state’s test

Each state’s grades 3 to 8 test this school year, and the grades it covers. Tests with a link have a page here, with the facts checked on their state’s own pages. The others are as we found them on November 3, 2026, some only on district pages or in search results.

What these tests are

Each state tests math and reading near the end of the school year, to see how children are doing against what its standards say they should know by then. Schools and the state use the results, and families get a report of their child’s scores.

Many are taken on a computer, with kinds of question a paper test doesn’t have: select all that apply, drop-down menus, dragging answers into place and typing a number into an answer box. The practice sets here have select all that apply and typed answers too, so those aren’t new on the day.

How to help at home

  1. Little and often

Ten or fifteen minutes of math most days does more than a long session the week before.

  2. Try the formats first

Select all that apply and typed answers can be new to children. One practice set shows them how each works.

  3. Go over every mistake

The slip matters more than the score. Talk it through, then try one like it.

  4. Use the state’s own practice

Each test’s page here links to its state’s official practice tests, where there are some.

  5. Keep it calm

A good night’s sleep and a normal morning help more than cramming.

Questions about state tests

Which test will my child take?

The one their state gives: find your state in the table. Eleven states and the District of Columbia are members of Smarter Balanced, and most of them give its test, some under a name of their own: California’s is the CAASPP and the District’s is DC CAPE 2.0. Indiana and Michigan are members too, but their tests keep their own names, ILEARN and M-STEP.

Are these real state test questions?

No. Thena writes every question in code, in the style of each test, and never copies a state’s own questions. Each test’s page links to its state’s official practice tests where there are some.

Is the practice free?

Yes. Every grade’s practice set is free with no account. It’s marked in your browser as soon as it’s done, and nothing is stored.
