NJSLA-A practice test 2027
In New Jersey, the grades 3-8 test is the NJSLA-A, short for New Jersey Student Learning Assessment-Adaptive. Here’s what we could confirm about the 2027 test, and a free math practice set for each grade.

Free practice by grade
A set of math questions in the style of the NJSLA-A for each grade, in the online formats state tests use, marked as soon as it’s done.
The test in 2027
- Who gives it
- New Jersey. Not named by NJDOE on the pages read; the New Jersey Assessments Portal and TIDE are hosted by Cambium Assessment.
- When
- April 19 - May 21, 2027 (NJSLA-A ELA grades 3-9 and math grades 3-8 and high school; NJSLA-Science grades 5 and 8 in the same window).
- What it checks
- New Jersey Student Learning Standards (2023 NJSLS for ELA and mathematics).
- How it’s taken
- Taken on a computer. It’s adaptive: the questions get harder or easier depending on the answers so far.
- Calculators
- No calculator in grades 3-5. A basic four-function calculator in grade 6; check grades 7-8 with your school.
What the math test looks like
The kinds of question on it:
- Multiple choice
- Multi-select
- Table match
- Equation (typed numeric answer or expression)
- Graphing
- Hot text
How long it is:
- Grade 3: 41 items
- Grade 4: 41 items
- Grade 5: 41 items
- Grade 6: 46 items
- Grade 7: 46 items
- Grade 8: 43 items
- Every grade: One unit in two 75-minute sessions (150 minutes), plus 25-30 minutes for log-on and directions
How math is reported
The NJSLA-A reports a child’s math in these categories. The practice sets here are marked by them too.
- Grade 3
- Operations and Algebraic Thinking
- Number and Operations in Base Ten and Number and Operations - Fractions
- Measurement
- Geometry and Data Literacy (reported for groups only)
- Grades 4 and 5
- Number and Operations in Base Ten
- Number and Operations - Fractions
- Operations and Algebraic Thinking and Measurement
- Geometry and Data Literacy (reported for groups only)
- Grades 6 and 7
- Ratios and Proportional Relationships
- The Number System
- Expressions and Equations
- Geometry and Statistics and Probability
- Grade 8
- Expressions and Equations and the Number System
- Geometry
- Functions and Statistics and Probability
Scores and results
A new NJSLA-A scale score and one of five levels; Met Expectations (Level 4) is on track. Math Level 4 starts at 1399 in grade 3, 1431 (4), 1463 (5), 1500 (6), 1526 (7) and 1577 (8). The State Board approved these cut scores on September 9, 2026.
The levels, lowest first:
- Did Not Yet Meet Expectations
- Partially Met Expectations
- Approaching Expectations
- Met Expectations
- Exceeded Expectations
When results come: NJDOE expects spring 2027 NJSLA-A results on June 30, 2027. Districts must give families their reports within 30 days of receiving them. Spring 2026 results came in fall 2026 because new cut scores had to be set first.
What’s changing
NJSLA became computer-adaptive (NJSLA-A) in spring 2026: it starts at medium difficulty and adjusts after each group of questions. It has a new score scale and new cut scores. Students who need paper get a fixed form, not an adaptive test.
Official practice
The state’s own practice is the best way to see what the real test looks like.
- Official NJSLA-A practice tests (nj.gov)
The sets here aren’t real NJSLA-A questions: Thena writes every one in code, in the style of the test, and never copies a state’s own.
