What’s on grade 8 math

The NJSLA-A reports grade 8 math in 3 categories. The practice set covers each of them:

Expressions and Equations and the Number System

  • Rational and irrational numbers
  • Estimating square roots between whole numbers
  • The rules of exponents
  • Square roots and cube roots
  • Scientific notation
  • Slope from two points or a table
  • Equations with variables on both sides
  • Systems of two linear equations

Geometry

  • Translations, reflections and rotations on the coordinate plane
  • Similar figures and dilations
  • Angles in triangles and where parallel lines are crossed
  • The Pythagorean theorem
  • Volume of cylinders, cones and spheres

Functions and Statistics and Probability

  • What makes a relation a function
  • Linear functions as models: rate of change and starting value
  • Telling linear and nonlinear functions apart
  • Scatter plots: association and lines of fit
  • Two-way tables and relative frequencies
  • The NJSLA-A checks the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (2023 NJSLS for ELA and mathematics).
  • The real grade 8 test: 43 items
  • Calculators: No calculator in grades 3-5. A basic four-function calculator in grade 6; check grades 7-8 with your school.

How to help at home

  1. Do one set, then talk

After a set, look at the ones they missed together. Ask how they got their answer before saying what the right one is.

  2. Little and often

A short set a few times a week does more than a long session the week before.

  3. Use real life

Prices at the store, recipes, distances and times on a trip: grade-level math is everywhere.

  4. Keep it calm

The test checks how the year went. A good night’s sleep helps more than cramming.
