STAAR practice test 2027
In Texas, the grades 3-8 test is the STAAR, short for State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness. Here’s what we could confirm about the 2027 test, and a free math practice set for each grade.

Free practice by grade
A set of math questions in the style of the STAAR for each grade, in the online formats state tests use, marked as soon as it’s done.
The test in 2027
- Who gives it
- Texas. Texas Education Agency builds the tests; Cambium Assessment hosts the online practice test site.
- When
- Reading language arts April 5-16, 2027; mathematics April 19-30, 2027 (TEA 2026-27 testing calendar, April 2026).
- What it checks
- TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills).
- How it’s taken
- It isn’t adaptive.
- Calculators
- Not allowed in grades 3-7 unless the student qualifies for a calculator accommodation. Required in grade 8.
What the math test looks like
The kinds of question on it:
- Multiple choice
- Multiselect
- Inline choice (drop-down)
- Hot spot
- Equation editor (typed numeric answer)
- Drag and drop
How math is reported
The STAAR reports a child’s math in these categories. The practice sets here are marked by them too.
- Grades 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8
- Numerical Representations and Relationships
- Computations and Algebraic Relationships
- Geometry and Measurement
- Data Analysis and Personal Financial Literacy
- Grade 7
- Probability and Numerical Representations
- Computations and Algebraic Relationships
- Geometry and Measurement
- Data Analysis and Personal Financial Literacy
Scores and results
A scale score and one of four performance levels. Educators set the cut scores between levels (standard setting) whenever the TEKS or a blueprint changes.
The levels, lowest first:
- Did Not Meet Grade Level
- Approaches Grade Level
- Meets Grade Level
- Masters Grade Level
When results come: TEA's calendar gives grades 3-8 results 4-5 weeks after a window closes (math closes April 30, 2027), so about early June 2027. Families see them in the Family Portal at texasassessment.gov.
What’s changing
Spring 2027 is the last STAAR for grades 3-8 (December 2027 for end-of-course tests). Under HB 8 (89th Legislature, 2nd Called Session, 2025) the Student Success Tool (SST) replaces STAAR from 2027-28: required beginning-of-year (September) and middle-of-year (January-February) tests that are adaptive and multiple choice or multiple select, then an end-of-year test in two fixed parts (an extended constructed response in early April and multiple choice in May). Tests must be shorter than STAAR, with results to schools within two business days. An SST stand-alone field test runs February 1-5, 2027. A new grade 6 math item type (shading parts of a model) is being field-tested from spring 2026.
Official practice
The state’s own practice is the best way to see what the real test looks like.
- Official STAAR practice tests (txpt.cambiumtds.com)
- Released STAAR questions (tea.texas.gov)
The sets here aren’t real STAAR questions: Thena writes every one in code, in the style of the test, and never copies a state’s own.
