The papers
Two paper-based papers of about 60 to 65 minutes each with a short break: one covers maths and non-verbal reasoning, the other verbal skills (the schools describe the content as verbal and non-verbal reasoning, English and mathematics). All questions are multiple choice, answered on a separate sheet that is scanned and computer-marked, with no negative marking; the weighting of the elements and the number of questions are not published. Children sit a morning or afternoon session at one of the four schools. The Consortium says the Quest test from September 2027 will have a similar structure of two papers.
With Exam Prep, Thena sets practice papers in your child’s test’s style and goes over every mistake with them on her board: £49 a month with the Solo plan.

What score qualifies in Slough?
A standardised score of 111 or more (the average standardised score across both papers) makes a child eligible for consideration at any of the four schools. The scale is fixed so that 111 marks the top 35% of those sitting the test. Eligibility is not a place: each school then applies its own oversubscription criteria, several of them by rank of score within priority areas. For 2026 entry, for example, Herschel filled its remaining places on rank score down to 115, Langley admitted its Priority Area 1 down to 113 and Priority Area 2 down to 119, and Upton Court's rank-score places went down to 121.

Good to know
Late testing and moving to the area
Late registrations are not accepted unless there are exceptional circumstances. Children who are ill on the day can sit later (a doctor's note may be needed), but there is no later sitting for clashes with other schools' tests. Scores cannot be remarked or appealed; parents can appeal only against a refusal of a place after 1 March 2027.
Who runs admissions
Each school is its own admission authority (Herschel, Langley and Upton Court are academies; St Bernard's is a Catholic voluntary aided school, which also needs a supplementary form). They set one shared test as the Slough Consortium of Grammar Schools, and Slough Borough Council coordinates the allocation of places. Families apply through their home local authority by Saturday 31 October 2026.
