How to learn the 2 times table

  • 1

    Double it

2 × 6 means two 6s, which is double 6: 12. Doubling small numbers is something many children can do before they meet times tables at all.

  • 2

    Even, always

Every answer is an even number, ending in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8. If an answer ends in anything else, it’s wrong.

  • 3

    Count in pairs

Socks, shoes, eyes and hands come in 2s. Count pairs out loud on a walk: 2, 4, 6, 8.

The pattern in the 2s

The last digit of each answer, from 2 × 1 to 2 × 12. They go round in a loop of 5, so once your child spots it, they can check any answer.

Questions parents ask

How can my child learn the 2 times table?

Five minutes a day beats an hour on Sunday. Start with the facts they already know from other tables (turn 2 × 5 round and it’s 5 × 2), then learn one trick: every answer is a double. Then play: answering from memory, again and again, is what makes facts stick, and a game makes them want to.

When do children learn the 2 times table?

Children count in 2s in Year 1 and learn the 2 times table in Year 2, in England’s National Curriculum.

What is the hardest fact in the 2 times table?

The bigger doubles: 2 × 12 = 24 and 2 × 11 = 22. Practise doubling teen numbers and they come easily.

Is the 2 times table game free?

Yes. Every game here is free, with no account, no adverts and no timer. Progress is kept on this device only. Thena, the AI teacher who made them, has lessons for children that start with 3 free.
