How to learn the 1 times table

  • 1

    It stays the same

One lot of 8 is 8. One lot of 100 is 100. Multiplying by 1 never changes a number, so there is nothing to memorise.

  • 2

    Turn it round

1 × 7 is one lot of 7, and 7 × 1 is seven lots of 1. Both are 7, and the same is true for every fact in every table.

  • 3

    Why it matters

Multiplying and dividing by 1 is in the multiplication tables check, and it’s the start of a big idea in maths: a number that changes nothing, like adding 0.

The pattern in the 1s

The last digit of each answer, from 1 × 1 to 1 × 12. They count up, 1, 2, 3, just like counting, until 10 lots comes round to 0.

Questions parents ask

How can my child learn the 1 times table?

Five minutes a day beats an hour on Sunday. Start with the facts they already know from other tables (turn 1 × 5 round and it’s 5 × 1), then learn one trick: any number times 1 is itself. Then play: answering from memory, again and again, is what makes facts stick, and a game makes them want to.

When do children learn the 1 times table?
