How to learn the 10 times table

  • 1

    Move one place

10 × 7: the 7 moves from the ones to the tens, and a 0 holds the ones place. Schools teach it this way rather than “add a 0”, which goes wrong with decimals later.

  • 2

    Count in tens

10, 20, 30, 40: counting in 10s on fingers gives every fact. Ten fingers, ten 10s, a hundred.

  • 3

    A helper for others

The 10s unlock other tables: 5s are half of them, 9s are one lot less, 11s and 12s are one or two lots more.

Questions parents ask

How can my child learn the 10 times table?

Five minutes a day beats an hour on Sunday. Start with the facts they already know from other tables (turn 10 × 5 round and it’s 5 × 10), then learn one trick: each digit moves one place to the left. Then play: answering from memory, again and again, is what makes facts stick, and a game makes them want to.

When do children learn the 10 times table?

Children count in 10s in Year 1 and learn the 10 times table in Year 2, in England’s National Curriculum.

What is the hardest fact in the 10 times table?

None, once place value makes sense. The ones to watch are 10 × 11 = 110 and 10 × 12 = 120.

Is the 10 times table game free?
