Say the word. Write one sound in each box.
Elkonin boxes, or sound boxes, show how many sounds a word has: one box for each sound, so ship has three, sh, i and p, though it has four letters. Children say the word slowly, touch a box for each sound, then write the sounds in.
Say each word together first, stretching it out. A child who can hear the sounds in a word can spell it, and one who can see them can read it.
Play the phonics games, where Thena says every sound, or print a phonics chart to keep beside the sheet.
Match words to their pictures and write in the missing sounds, from CVC words to long vowel sounds.
Read, trace and write each word on handwriting lines, or find them all in a word search.
