How to use a phonics chart

Point to a sound and say it together, then the picture word: β€œsh, ship”. Say the sound, not the letter’s name, and keep it short: β€œmmm”, not β€œmuh”.

When your child is writing and gets stuck on a sound, ask them to find it on the chart rather than telling them. Looking it up is how the spelling sticks.

Start with the letter sounds a to z, then digraphs (two letters, one sound, like sh and th), then vowel teams and silent e, the order most phonics programs teach them.

Reading starts with sounds.

In Thena’s lessons every sound is said clearly, and children tap, blend and read with her, at their own level.
