How to learn the 6 times table

  • 1

    Fives and one more

    6 × 7 is five 7s and one more 7: 35 + 7 = 42. If your child knows the 5s, every 6s fact is one step away.

  • 2

    Even numbers match

    When 6 times an even number, the answer ends in that number: 6 × 2 = 12, 6 × 4 = 24, 6 × 6 = 36, 6 × 8 = 48.

  • 3

    Double the 3s

    6 × 8 is double 3 × 8. 3 × 8 is 24, and double 24 is 48.

The pattern in the 6s

The last digit of each answer, from 6 × 1 to 6 × 12. They go around in a loop of 5, so once your child spots it, they can check any answer.

Questions parents ask

How can my child learn the 6 times table?

Five minutes a day beats an hour on Sunday. Start with the facts they already know from other tables (turn 6 × 5 around and it’s 5 × 6), then learn one trick: take the 5s answer and add one more group. Then play: answering from memory, again and again, is what makes facts stick, and a game makes them want to.

When do children learn the 6 times table?

What is the hardest fact in the 6 times table?
