How to learn the 9 times table
- 1

Ten groups, take one
9 × 7 is 10 × 7 take away one 7: 70 − 7 = 63. Ten groups is easy, and one less group is one step.

Digits add to 9
Up to 9 × 10 the digits of every answer add to 9: 18, 27, 36, 45. And the tens digit is one less than the number you multiply by: 9 × 6 starts with a 5.
The pattern in the 9s
The last digit of each answer, from 9 × 1 to 9 × 12. They count down, 9, 8, 7, while the tens count up: the digits always add to 9 up to 9 × 10.

When children learn it
In 3rd grade. Common Core expects children to know every product of two one-digit numbers from memory by the end of the year, so the 9s are part of that.

Questions parents ask
How can my child learn the 9 times table?
Five minutes a day beats an hour on Sunday. Start with the facts they already know from other tables (turn 9 × 5 around and it’s 5 × 9), then learn one trick: there’s a trick on your fingers, and the digits add up to 9. Then play: answering from memory, again and again, is what makes facts stick, and a game makes them want to.

What is the hardest fact in the 9 times table?
