The 7 times table

The one everyone says is hardest. It isn’t, once you know where the 7s hide in other tables.

How to learn the 7 times table

  • 1

    Turn it around

    7 × 3 is 3 × 7, 7 × 5 is 5 × 7. By the time children reach the 7s, they know all but one fact from other tables. The only new one is 7 × 7 = 49.

  • 2

    5, 6, 7, 8

    56 = 7 × 8. Say the numbers in order: 5, 6, 7, 8. The fact everyone forgets now remembers itself.

  • 3

    Fives and twos

    7 × 6 is five 6s and two 6s: 30 + 12 = 42. Split the 7 into a 5 and a 2, both easy tables.

The pattern in the 7s

The last digit of each answer, from 7 × 1 to 7 × 12. Every digit comes once before any repeats, so there’s no pattern to lean on. That’s why this table needs more practice than most.

When children learn it

In 3rd grade. Common Core expects children to know every product of two one-digit numbers from memory by the end of the year, so the 7s are part of that.

Questions parents ask

How can my child learn the 7 times table?

Five minutes a day beats an hour on Sunday. Start with the facts they already know from other tables (turn 7 × 5 around and it’s 5 × 7), then learn one trick: most of the 7s are already known from other tables. Then play: answering from memory, again and again, is what makes facts stick, and a game makes them want to.
