How to learn the 11 times table

  • 1

    Repeat the digit

    11 × 4 = 44, 11 × 7 = 77. Up to 9 × 11, write the number twice.

  • 2

    Tens plus one more

    11 × 12 is 10 × 12 and one more 12: 120 + 12 = 132. It works for every fact in the 11s.

  • 3

    Split and add

    For 11 × 12, write the 1 and the 2 apart and put their total in the middle: 1, then 1 + 2 = 3, then 2. 132.

Questions parents ask

How can my child learn the 11 times table?

Five minutes a day beats an hour on Sunday. Start with the facts they already know from other tables (turn 11 × 5 around and it’s 5 × 11), then learn one trick: up to 9 × 11 the answer repeats the digit. Then play: answering from memory, again and again, is what makes facts stick, and a game makes them want to.
