How to learn the 1 times table

  • 1

    It stays the same

One group of 8 is 8. One group of 100 is 100. Multiplying by 1 never changes a number, so there is nothing to memorize.

  • 2

    Turn it around

1 × 7 is one group of 7, and 7 × 1 is seven groups of 1. Both are 7, and the same is true for every fact in every table.

  • 3

    Why it matters

Multiplying and dividing by 1 is in the multiplication tables check, and it’s the start of a big idea in math: a number that changes nothing, like adding 0.

The pattern in the 1s

The last digit of each answer, from 1 × 1 to 1 × 12. They count up, 1, 2, 3, just like counting, until 10 groups comes around to 0.
