What’s on grade 7 math
We couldn’t confirm the IAR’s own reporting categories for grade 7 on the state’s pages, so the practice set groups its questions by topic:

- Percent problems: tips, discounts, markups and percent change
- Money: sales tax and simple interest
The Number System
- Adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers
- Word problems with negative numbers
- Multiplying and dividing positive and negative numbers
Expressions and Equations
- Combining like terms and expanding
- Solving two-step equations
- Solving two-step inequalities
Geometry
- Scale drawings and maps
- Supplementary, complementary and vertical angles
- Circumference and area of circles
- Volume and surface area of prisms
- Which side lengths and angles make a triangle
Statistics and Probability
- Random samples, and predictions from them
- Comparing two groups by their means and spread
- The probability of a simple event
- Compound events: counting outcomes and their probability
- The IAR checks the Illinois Learning Standards (Common Core).
- Calculators: No calculator in grades 3-5. Grades 6-7 use a four-function calculator with square root and percent, and grade 8 a scientific calculator, on the calculator sections. Online tests have an embedded calculator for those sections.
How to help at home
Do one set, then talk
After a set, look at the ones they missed together. Ask how they got their answer before saying what the right one is.
Little and often
A short set a few times a week does more than a long session the week before.
Use real life
Prices at the store, recipes, distances and times on a trip: grade-level math is everywhere.
Keep it calm
The test checks how the year went. A good night’s sleep helps more than cramming.

Other grades
See Thena explain the ones they missed
With an account, Thena goes over every question your child gets wrong: she puts it back on her board, finds the slip and works it through out loud, then gives them one like it to do alone.
