The Warwickshire 11+

Warwickshire’s grammar schools use the West Midlands Grammar Schools test, set by GL Assessment. There’s no fixed pass mark: after the test, each school sets its own automatic qualifying score.

The papers

The shared West Midlands Grammar Schools test: two papers, each about 60 minutes including spoken instructions and practice questions (roughly 45 to 50 minutes of testing), with a short break between them. Each paper is split into separately timed sections of English comprehension, verbal reasoning, maths and non-verbal (spatial) reasoning, with instructions and timings given on audio; a child cannot go back to an earlier section. No writing: every answer is marked on a separate answer sheet. Results are weighted 50% English and verbal reasoning, 25% non-verbal reasoning and 25% maths, and age-standardised around a median score of 200.

With Exam Prep, Thena sets practice papers in your child’s test’s style and goes over every mistake with them on her board: £49 a month with the Solo plan.

What score qualifies in Warwickshire?

No fixed pass mark. After the test each school, through its headteacher and a Committee of Reference (Warwickshire's Local Review Process), sets an Automatic Qualifying Score and a lower minimum score for its waiting list. Places then go by each school's own criteria, usually by highest score and living in its priority area, with some places for looked after and pupil premium children scoring up to 15 or 20 marks below the qualifying score. Scores for 2026 entry (automatic qualifying score, waiting-list minimum in brackets): King Edward VI School 239 (230), Stratford Girls' Grammar School 227 (224), Alcester Grammar School 225 (220), Lawrence Sheriff School 213 (210), Rugby High School 213 (210), Ashlawn selective places 208 (204). The 2027 entry scores are set after the test.

Good to know

Late testing and moving to the area

Registrations after 4pm on 30 June 2026 are late unless Warwickshire Admissions accepts exceptional and unforeseen circumstances: late candidates are tested before 6 March 2027 and considered only after the first round of offers. Children who move house and register by 31 December 2026 get extra test sessions by 31 January 2027 (Lawrence Sheriff School's 2027-28 policy). Children already in Year 7 and under 12 can sit the test through the in-year process; at 12 or over, each school assesses them itself.

Who runs admissions

Each of the six grammar schools is its own admission authority. Warwickshire County Council's Admissions Service runs registration, testing and results on their behalf, and asks for proof of address in December (deadline 31 December 2026); families apply through their home council, which makes the offers.
