Admissions

The test

The school's own entrance exam, the FSCE (Future Stories Community Enterprise) test, sat at Heckmondwike Grammar School: English and maths papers (multiple choice and written answers) plus a creative writing task, all on one day.

What qualifies

No pass mark is published: the English and maths papers are computer-marked, age-standardised and combined, and children with an eligible score have their creative writing assessed and are ranked. There are always more children meeting the standard than the 210 places; about half the places go through the oversubscription criteria and the rest in rank order of the final weighted score.

Who gets priority

After EHCPs naming the school, children who meet the standard are ranked: looked after and previously looked after children, then pupil premium children (no cap), then the catchment (WF16, WF15 6, WF15 7, WF15 8A and WF15 8BA to WF15 8BE), then siblings (including in the sixth form), then children of staff employed 2 or more years, then grade 2 or above in solo music (no more than 5% of offers). Remaining places go by overall exam performance; over three-quarters of places usually go to children outside the catchment.

Registering

Families registered online with the school (Applicaa form on the school website) from 9am on 11 May to midday on 22 June 2026, with pupil premium and SEND evidence by midday on 26 June and music certificates by midday on 11 September. The exam was on Monday 14 September 2026 at the school, with results targeted for 17 October 2026.

Open events

Open evenings on 17 and 18 June 2026, 5pm to 8pm; the school holds them in the summer term before the test, and the admissions talk is online.

Good to know

Mixed academy with a mixed sixth form; external sixth form applications for September 2027 close at 9am on Friday 19 December 2026. The applicants figure is local authority applications naming the school as any preference for September 2026 (DfE school-level data: 580, of which 355 first preferences, 207 offers); the school says over 1,200 children typically register for the exam each year. A child may sit the exam only once, children who meet the standard but get no offer go on waiting list 1 ranked by the criteria, and appeals are heard in June.

Not confirmed yet

  • No numeric qualifying score is published (the policy only refers to the standard required for selection).
  • Number of children who sat the September 2026 exam is not published (the school says over 1,200 typically register).
