The grammar schools here use the West Midlands Grammar Schools test, set by GL Assessment, through the Shropshire, Walsall and Wolverhampton consortium. Queen Mary’s High School has published Saturday 11 September 2027 for the next one.

The papers
The shared West Midlands Grammar Schools test: two papers, each about 60 minutes including spoken instructions and practice questions (roughly 45 to 50 minutes of testing), with a short break between them. Each paper is split into separately timed sections of English comprehension, verbal reasoning, maths and non-verbal (spatial) reasoning, with instructions and timings given on audio; a child cannot go back to an earlier section. No writing: every answer is marked on a separate answer sheet. Results are weighted 50% English and verbal reasoning, 25% non-verbal reasoning and 25% maths, and age-standardised around a median score of 200.

The 2027 test: Saturday 11 September 2027 at Queen Mary's High School (other centres not yet published) The 2026 test: Saturday 12 September 2026 at Queen Mary's Grammar School and Queen Mary's High School (possibly morning and afternoon sessions); Queen Mary's High School's late test is Tuesday 2 March 2027.
How do you register for the 11+ in Wolverhampton and Walsall?
For the 2027 test (2028 entry): May to June 2027, exact dates to be confirmed (Queen Mary's High School) For the 2026 test (2027 entry): Tuesday 5 May 2026 to 4pm on Friday 26 June 2026, online through the West Midlands Grammar Schools website (requests for reasonable adjustments by 4pm on Friday 12 June 2026)
When do 11+ results come out in Wolverhampton and Walsall?
For the 2026 test: Queen Mary's Grammar School and Queen Mary's High School sent scores on Wednesday 14 October 2026 (published deadline Friday 16 October 2026); Wolverhampton Girls' High School sends a notification letter in October 2026. Offers come from the home council on 1 March 2027.
What score qualifies in Wolverhampton and Walsall?
No fixed pass mark: each school's governors set a minimum qualifying score after the test, then places go in rank order of the age-standardised score (scale centred on 200), with priority for looked after and pupil premium children. Queen Mary's Grammar School: minimum about 200 for 2027 entry, subject to governors' confirmation in November 2026; for 2026 entry the minimum was 200 and the lowest non-pupil-premium score offered on national offer day was 225 (223 after the waiting list), for 2025 entry 224 (221); pupil premium children get up to 30% of places (54), Walsall state primary pupils first. Queen Mary's High School: 2027 minimum to be confirmed in November 2026; for 2026 entry the minimum was 200, the lowest pupil premium score offered 200 and the lowest other score 216 on offer day (212 after the waiting list); 2025 entry 198 and 213 (211). Wolverhampton Girls' High School: a qualifying score set in October 2026 gives automatic places to looked after girls and the 25 highest-scoring pupil premium girls who reach it; all other places go strictly by score; for 2026 entry all 180 places went to girls scoring 208 or above, and the waiting list takes girls within 2% of the last automatic place.

Good to know
Late testing and moving to the area
Registration after 4pm on 26 June 2026 is late. Queen Mary's Grammar School and Queen Mary's High School test late candidates: if governors accept exceptional circumstances (for example moving into the area) the application counts as on time, otherwise the child is ranked only for a waiting-list place after offers are made. Queen Mary's High School opens late registration in December 2026 and holds its late test on Tuesday 2 March 2027. Wolverhampton Girls' High School considers late applications in exceptional circumstances and, if accepted, tests on another date.
Who runs admissions
Each school is its own admission authority (Queen Mary's Grammar School and Queen Mary's High School are in The Mercian Trust; Wolverhampton Girls' High School is an academy run by its governing body). They test together as the Shropshire, Walsall and Wolverhampton consortium (with Haberdashers' Adams and Newport Girls' High School) inside the West Midlands Grammar Schools partnership; families apply through their home council, which makes the offers.
