Townley Grammar School

Townley Grammar School in Bexleyheath is a girls’ grammar school with a mixed sixth form and 224 Year 7 places, the most of Bexley’s four grammar schools. Girls take the Bexley Selection Test; 20 places are kept for pupil premium girls who reach the selective score, and after Bexley’s 180 highest scorers, siblings and staff children the rest go by distance, as Bexley has no catchment areas.

Admissions

The test

The Bexley Selection Test, run by the London Borough of Bexley with papers from Quest Assessments: two multiple-choice papers of about 50 minutes each, covering verbal ability and English comprehension, numerical reasoning and non-verbal reasoning.

What qualifies

Girls must be deemed selective: a total weighted age-standardised score (verbal 50%, numerical 25%, non-verbal 25%; average 200) at or above the selective score Bexley Council sets each year with the four grammar schools, which is not published as a number. For 2026 entry, 2,070 of the 5,866 children who sat were deemed selective, for 800 places across Bexley's four grammar schools.

Who gets priority

After girls whose EHC plan names the school: looked-after and previously looked-after girls; 20 places for Pupil Premium girls reaching the selective score, ranked by score then distance (if fewer than 20 are filled, more Pupil Premium places go to girls up to 2% below the selective score; the school's form is needed); girls with one of Bexley's highest 180 scores; siblings at the school; children of staff; then straight-line distance, as Bexley has no catchment areas. Ties on distance go to the higher aggregate score, then random allocation; the last place on National Offer Day 2026 went at 7.076 miles.

Registering

Online with the London Borough of Bexley from 1 March to midnight on 31 March 2026, with no late registrations and no appeal. The test was sat between 2 and 10 September 2026 at primary schools acting as test centres, or 7 to 10 September 2026 at the four grammar schools, with results emailed from 4pm on Friday 2 October 2026; families then name the school on their home council's Common Application Form by 31 October 2026.

Open events

Open mornings (9am to 11:30am) on 7, 8, 12 and 14 October 2026 and open afternoons (1:30pm to 3:30pm) on 8 and 14 October, with small group tours on 6, 9, 13, 15 and 16 October, all booked through the school's website. An open evening for Year 5 families was held on Wednesday 24 June 2026.

Good to know

A girls' grammar school with a co-educational sixth form: boys join in Year 12, with up to 100 places for external students (an average point score of 6.00 across the best 8 GCSEs, English and maths at grade 5 or above). The school's supplementary form, needed only for the Pupil Premium places, closed on 31 October 2026. If places are left, Bexley's reserve list offers them to girls 1 mark below the selective score, then 2 marks below; refused applicants can appeal to an independent panel. The applicants figure is Bexley Council's count of all preferences naming the school for 2026 entry, not first preferences.
