Stretford Grammar School

Stretford Grammar School is a mixed grammar school in Manchester with 160 Year 7 places, one of the five schools that share the Trafford consortium test. Children need a score of 334 to be eligible, and places then follow its priority order: pupil premium children in its catchment, siblings, then other children in its catchment postcodes, with the nearest first in each group.

Admissions

The test

The Trafford Grammar School Consortium test set by GL Assessment, shared by Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, Altrincham Grammar School for Girls, Sale, Stretford and Urmston: two papers of about one hour each in verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and maths.

What qualifies

A candidate must score 334 or above (age-standardised) to be eligible; this does not guarantee a place. Pupil premium candidates scoring 324 to 333 are automatically raised to 334R, and other candidates scoring 324 to 333 go to a local review that can also award 334R.

Who gets priority

After looked after and previously looked after children (including those adopted from state care abroad): pupil premium or service premium children in the catchment, then siblings in Years 7 to 11, then children in the catchment (postcodes M32, M33, M41, M15, M16 in Trafford and Manchester, M17 and M21), then pupil premium or service premium children outside it, then everyone else by straight-line distance. Within each criterion places go to those living nearest, with random allocation as the final tie-break; no fixed number of pupil premium places.

Registering

Families registered online with the school through the consortium's Applicaa form from 12 noon on 23 April to 12 noon on 19 June 2026 (late registrations are tested only after 1 March 2027). The test was on Monday 14 September 2026, with results sent before 31 October 2026, the Trafford application deadline.

Open events

Open evening on Thursday 25 June 2026, 5pm to 8pm, with no appointment needed; registered candidates were offered a Headteacher's talk.

Good to know

Mixed foundation school (not an academy) with a mixed sixth form that takes external students with an Attainment 8 score of 60 or more. The applicants figure is the number of local authority applications naming the school as any preference for September 2026 (DfE school-level data: 1,236, of which 263 first preferences, 170 offers), not the number who sat the test; Trafford reports 2026 offers reached the distance criterion up to 4.414 miles. A child's standardised score can differ between consortium schools, and from 2028 entry the consortium test moves to FSCE (sat in September 2027), then to the summer term of Year 5 from 2029 entry.

Not confirmed yet

  • Number of children who sat the September 2026 consortium test is not published by the school or Trafford.
