Burnham Grammar School

Burnham Grammar School is a mixed grammar school with 180 Year 7 places, taking children through the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test. A score of 121 qualifies, and places then follow its rules rather than the score. Admissions

The test

the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (GL Assessment), run by Buckinghamshire Council for The Buckinghamshire Grammar Schools (TBGS)

What qualifies

A Secondary Transfer Test Score (STTS) of 121 or more, or being deemed qualified at a Selection Review. Qualified children are not ranked by score: places follow the oversubscription rules, except up to 6 places for looked-after children or catchment children on pupil premium who score 115 to 120.

Who gets priority

Looked-after and previously looked-after children; up to 6 places for looked-after children or catchment children on pupil premium scoring 115 to 120; qualified catchment children on pupil premium; siblings of current pupils, then of former pupils; exceptional medical or social need; children of staff; children in the school's catchment area (as defined in Buckinghamshire's coordinated scheme, map on the school's website); then all others, each rule by straight-line distance to the nearest school gate. In March 2026 every qualified catchment applicant was offered a place and the last place by distance went to 2.688 miles.

Registering

Children at state-funded Buckinghamshire primary schools were registered automatically (parents could withdraw them by 2 June); all others registered online with Buckinghamshire Council from 1 May (10am) to 2 June 2026 (3pm). The practice test was on 8 September and the Secondary Transfer Test on 10 September 2026, in school for Buckinghamshire and partner primary pupils and at a grammar school or other venue for everyone else; results came out on 9 October 2026. Families then named the school on their home council's secondary application by 31 October 2026.

Open events

Open Evening on Thursday 17 September 2026 (5.30pm to 8.30pm, with the headteacher's talk at 5.45pm, 6.30pm, 7.30pm and 8.15pm) and open mornings by booking on Wednesday 14 and Friday 16 October 2026. The Sixth Form Open Evening is on Thursday 19 November 2026.

Good to know

Mixed school, girls and boys from Year 7 through the sixth form (40 external Year 12 places); families using the pupil premium or staff rules must tell [email protected] by the deadline. The school's policy gives 12 June 2026 as the test registration deadline, but the council, which runs the test, gave 2 June 2026; catchment and distance use the address lived at from 1 September 2026. TBGS data show 63% of its September 2026 places went to children living outside Buckinghamshire, more than at any other Buckinghamshire grammar, and the applicants figure is how many times the school was named as a preference for September 2026 entry (345 as first preference, 180 offers), from DfE school-level data.
