Admissions

The test

the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (GL Assessment), run by Buckinghamshire Council for The Buckinghamshire Grammar Schools (TBGS)

What qualifies

A Secondary Transfer Test Score (STTS) of 121 or more, or being deemed qualified at a Selection Review. Qualified boys are not ranked by score: places follow the oversubscription rules, except up to 6 places for looked-after boys or catchment boys on pupil premium who score 115 to 120.

Who gets priority

Looked-after and previously looked-after boys; up to 6 places for looked-after boys or catchment boys on pupil premium scoring 115 to 120; qualified catchment boys on pupil premium; siblings at AGS, siblings at Aylesbury High School, then siblings of former AGS boys; children of staff; exceptional medical or social need; boys in the school's catchment area (map on the school's website); then all others, each rule by straight-line distance to the Walton Road gate. In March 2026 every qualified catchment applicant got a place and the last place by distance went to 9.788 miles.

Registering

Children at state-funded Buckinghamshire primary schools were registered automatically (parents could withdraw them by 2 June); all others registered online with Buckinghamshire Council from 1 May (10am) to 2 June 2026 (3pm). The practice test was on 8 September and the Secondary Transfer Test on 10 September 2026, in school for Buckinghamshire and partner primary pupils and at a grammar school or other venue for everyone else; results came out on 9 October 2026. Families then named the school on their home council's secondary application by 31 October 2026.

Open events

The 2026 to 2027 calendar lists a School Open Evening on Monday 14 September 2026 (5.45pm), open mornings on Monday 12 and Wednesday 14 October 2026 (9.30am to 11am) and another open evening on Monday 5 July 2027 (5.45pm). The Sixth Form Open Evening is on Thursday 19 November 2026.

Good to know

Boys only, including the sixth form (17 external Year 12 places). Catchment and distance are judged from the address lived at continuously from 1 September 2026; boys below 121 can ask for a Selection Review, and appeals are run by Buckinghamshire Council. The applicants figure is how many times the school was named as a preference for September 2026 entry (292 as first preference, 183 offers), from DfE school-level data; governors are consulting on the 2028 policy from 20 October to 1 December 2026.

Not confirmed yet

  • The catchment area is published only as a map on the school's website; the policy does not describe its extent in words.
