The Northern Ireland transfer test
Northern Ireland’s 63 post-primary schools that select by ability use one test, the SEAG Entrance Assessment, set and marked by GL Assessment. Children sit two papers of English and maths on two Saturdays in November, and there’s no pass mark.

- Who sits it
- Around 13,000 pupils a year (SEAG); around 40,000 pupils had sat the SEAG assessment by the end of 2025.
The papers
Two papers of identical format and difficulty, sat on two Saturdays; pupils sit both. Each starts with an untimed practice section (5 English and 5 maths questions, not counted), then a 60-minute main test of 56 one-mark questions, starting with either subject: English (28 questions: punctuation, grammar and spelling exercises of 5 multiple-choice questions each, then a comprehension passage with 13 questions, 7 multiple choice and 6 free response) and maths (28 questions: 22 multiple choice, 6 free response). Multiple-choice questions have 5 options and answers go on an answer sheet. Content follows the Northern Ireland Curriculum at Key Stage 2 (comprehension, spelling and punctuation, grammar, vocabulary; number, measures, shape and space, money, probability, data). A Gaeilge version is offered at 12 centres. SEAG replaced the previous arrangement of two different entrance assessments over four consecutive Saturdays with this single assessment.
With Exam Prep, Thena sets practice papers in your child’s test’s style and goes over every mistake with them on her board: £49 a month with the Solo plan.

What score qualifies in Northern Ireland?
There is no pass mark. The Statement of Outcomes gives an English (or Gaeilge) Standardised Age Score and a maths SAS (age-standardised, allowing for the number correct and the difficulty), their sum as the Total Standardised Age Score (TSAS), a Band from 1 (highest) to 6 (lowest) and a cohort percentile (SEAG says all pupils in Band 1 have a cohort percentile of 60 or higher). Each school uses the outcomes within its own published Year 8 admissions criteria.
Not confirmed yet
- SEAG's pages do not name the two former entrance assessments it replaced (usually called the AQE and GL/PPTC tests).
- Dates for the assessment to be sat in November 2027 are not published; SEAG says only that registration runs from mid-May to mid-September and the papers are in November.
- How each school ranks applicants (for example by TSAS or band) is in each school's own admissions criteria, which were not read.

Good to know
Late testing and moving to the area
Only the late registration window (closed 24 September 2026) and the emergency window of 19 and 20 October 2026; SEAG says there will be no further extensions and the emergency window is for 2026 only.
Who runs admissions
SEAG runs the assessment for all 63 post-primary schools in Northern Ireland that use academic selection. Each school sets its own admissions criteria, published on the Education Authority website on Wednesday 9 December 2026; parents apply through the Education Authority's EA Connect from 12 noon Wednesday 27 January to 12 noon Wednesday 3 March 2027 and hear the outcome on Saturday 8 May 2027. Children born between 2 July 2015 and 1 July 2016 apply for Year 8 in September 2027.
