These timings come from the 2026 guidance. The 2027 guidance is due on GOV.UK in April 2027.

What’s on it

Calculations, with no problems in words to read: place value, adding and taking away, multiplying and dividing in your head and on paper, squares and cubes, the order of operations, decimals, fractions and percentages of amounts.

The practice paper here has 36 questions for 40 marks, easiest first, with two long multiplications and two long divisions worth 2 marks each near the end.

How it’s marked

Each answer is worth a mark, and the long multiplications and divisions 2. On the real paper, one of those done the right way with a single slip still gets 1 of its 2 marks, so it pays to set out the working.

The arithmetic marks are added to the two reasoning papers’ to make a maths score out of 110, and that becomes a scaled score. The practice paper here marks the answers as soon as you finish and gives a scaled score estimate, as if every maths paper went the same way.

How to get ready

  1. Know the facts

Times tables and number bonds make every other question quicker.

  2. Set out the long ones

Write long multiplication and division in columns. A tidy layout catches slips, and the method can earn a mark.

  3. Check by working back

Multiply to check a division, and add to check a subtraction.

  4. Then add the clock

Once the paper feels comfortable at your own pace, try it in 30 minutes.
