Three steps to know a table

  • Count in steps

First, count up in the table’s steps: 3, 6, 9, 12. That’s the pattern every fact sits on.

  • In order

Then say the facts in order, one times three to twelve times three, without counting up on fingers.

  • Mixed up

A table is known when any fact comes straight back out of order: what’s 7 × 3? That’s the tick that counts, and what the Year 4 check asks.

  • Five minutes a day

A little practice every day does more than a long session once a week. The stickers make the habit something to see.

A fact that won’t stick? Ask Thena.

Thena draws the fact as rows of dots and finds the trick that makes it easy, the way your child’s school teaches it.
